Cost of moving from Canada to the UK
Canadians can move to the UK on the Youth Mobility Scheme up to age 35, or on a work visa. This page adds up the visa, the health surcharge, flights, shipping, the deposit and a buffer, in pounds and in Canadian dollars.
Fees only, not immigration advice. Whether you qualify for a visa, and which route suits you, is for the official site (gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration) or a registered adviser (MARA in Australia, RCIC in Canada, the Immigration Advice Authority (formerly OISC) in the UK) or a solicitor. We are neither.
Who is moving, and how
Needs a job offer from a licensed sponsor; partners and children can join you.
This visa is for one person, so the calculator counts one adult.
Where you will live
Rent figure: ONS average private rent, all property types, September 2026 (provisional). Deposit at most 5 weeks’ rent (6 weeks if annual rent is £50,000 or more), and at most 1 month’s rent in advance.

- For a Skilled Worker visa you need a job offer from a licensed sponsor first; the employer pays the sponsorship charges.
- UK visa fees and the health surcharge usually change in April; check them on the day you apply.
- Get moving quotes that state whether UK customs relief (Transfer of Residence) and delivery are included.

Rent, deposit and the first month
The rent figures are official statistics, not asking prices, so a new lease in a popular area often costs more. The deposit is set by law in each place, which is why it differs between cities:
- London: £2,338 per month (ONS average private rent, all property types, September 2026 (provisional); ONS: Private rent and house prices, UK, October 2026). Deposit at most 5 weeks’ rent (6 weeks if annual rent is £50,000 or more), and at most 1 month’s rent in advance (GOV.UK: Tenant Fees Act 2019 guidance for tenants).
- Elsewhere in England (England average, London included): £1,466 per month (ONS average private rent, all property types, September 2026 (provisional); ONS: Private rent and house prices, UK, October 2026). Deposit at most 5 weeks’ rent (6 weeks if annual rent is £50,000 or more), and at most 1 month’s rent in advance (GOV.UK: Tenant Fees Act 2019 guidance for tenants).
- Scotland: £1,011 per month (ONS average private rent, all property types, September 2026 (provisional); ONS: Private rent and house prices, UK, October 2026). Deposit at most 2 months’ rent (mygov.scot: paying rent and deposit).
- Wales: £848 per month (ONS average private rent, all property types, September 2026 (provisional); ONS: Private rent and house prices, UK, October 2026). No legal cap on the deposit in Wales; we assume 1 month’s rent (Welsh Government: Renting Homes (Fees etc.) (Wales) Act 2019 guidance (no cap; typically about one month)).
- Northern Ireland: £879 per month (ONS average private rent, all property types, July 2026 (latest for Northern Ireland); ONS: Private rent and house prices, UK, October 2026). Deposit at most 1 month’s rent (nidirect: Tenancy Deposit Scheme, information for tenants).
Flights, shipping and setting up
Flights are our estimate of a one-way economy fare from Canada (CA$450 to CA$1,100 per person); type your own fare to replace it. Shipping prices are the ranges movers publish, door to door unless they say otherwise:
- Suitcases only (extra checked bags): CA$130 to CA$400 per person (our estimate).
- Shared container (part load): £1,264 to £2,950 (Mover price guides for the UK–Canada route (Shipit, PSS, Sirelo); published for moves out of the UK).
- 20 ft container (2–3 bedrooms): £4,020 to £8,390 (Mover price guides for the UK–Canada route (Shipit, PSS, Sirelo); published for moves out of the UK).
- 40 ft container (3+ bedrooms): £7,236 to £8,900 (Mover price guides for the UK–Canada route (Shipit, PSS, Sirelo); published for moves out of the UK).
Setting up covers about two weeks of temporary accommodation, basic furniture and kitchen kit, a phone plan and local transport for the first weeks: £2,000 to £5,000 for one or two people, our estimate, scaled up for larger households. The buffer is the number of months you choose multiplied by your rent plus other monthly spending; most people need at least one month before the first pay arrives.
Rules that cost money after you arrive
The calculator counts what you pay to get there. These rules decide what the first year costs once you land, and most cost guides leave them out:
- Tax Leaving Canada triggers a tax on paper gains. When you stop being resident, Canada treats you as having sold most of your property at market value on that day, so gains on shares and funds are taxed even though you sold nothing. Canadian real estate, RRSPs and TFSAs are excluded. Anyone resident for 60 months or less in the past 10 years is also excused on property they brought with them. (Canada Revenue Agency: dispositions of property when you leave Canada)
- Tax Four years without UK tax on foreign income, if you qualify. If you were not UK resident for the 10 tax years before you arrive, you can claim relief on foreign income and gains for your first 4 tax years of UK residence. The claim is made year by year, and in any year you claim you lose your personal allowance and capital gains allowance, so it only pays when your foreign income is large. (HMRC HS266: foreign income and gains (FIG) regime)
- Driving licence Your licence can be swapped. Canada is on the UK’s list of countries whose car licences can be exchanged for a British one without a test. (GOV.UK: exchange a non-GB driving licence (designated countries))
