Financial Guide:
Career Decisions
Career pivots, remote work, and the goal of financial independence all have precise financial values. Most people decide on gut feel. Here's how to calculate the real Swiss numbers — and the rules that apply.
Career decision financial benchmarks
Swiss figures from the FSO and SECO — the numbers behind the big career calls.
Remote work: what it's actually worth (Switzerland)
Remote work saves on commuting (Swiss rail is excellent but pricey), lunches and clothing — though the half-fare/GA travelcard changes the maths.
| Category | In-office cost/yr | Remote cost/yr | Net savings | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commute (rail GA/point-to-point) | CHF 3,500 | CHF 0 | CHF 3,500 | GA travelcard ~CHF 3,995/yr |
| Commute (car + parking) | CHF 3,000 | CHF 0 | CHF 3,000 | Fuel, wear, city parking |
| Lunches & coffee | CHF 3,500 | CHF 1,500 | CHF 2,000 | Restaurant lunch is expensive |
| Work wardrobe | CHF 1,200 | CHF 300 | CHF 900 | Clothing + dry cleaning |
| Home office + utilities | CHF 0 | CHF 900 | −CHF 900 | Power, internet, setup |
| Net annual benefit | ~CHF 4,000–6,500/yr | Plus commuting hours saved |
Cross-border note: if you commute from France/Germany/Italy, remote days can affect which country taxes you and your social-security status. Quantify savings, but check the cross-border rules before changing your remote split.
Financial independence: how much you actually need (Switzerland)
The 25× rule applies anywhere. Mandatory health insurance is an ongoing cost to budget; pillar access and AHV set the timeline.
| Annual spending | FI number (25×) | Leaner (33×) | Monthly saving (15 yrs)* | Monthly saving (20 yrs)* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CHF 48,000 | CHF 1,200,000 | CHF 1,584,000 | CHF 3,800 | CHF 2,300 |
| CHF 72,000 | CHF 1,800,000 | CHF 2,376,000 | CHF 5,700 | CHF 3,450 |
| CHF 96,000 | CHF 2,400,000 | CHF 3,168,000 | CHF 7,600 | CHF 4,600 |
| CHF 120,000 | CHF 3,000,000 | CHF 3,960,000 | CHF 9,500 | CHF 5,750 |
*Assumes 7% real return. AHV (1st pillar) is from 65; 2nd/3rd-pillar access has its own rules. Budget ongoing health-insurance premiums into your spending.
Health insurance never stops: unlike countries with tax-funded systems, Swiss mandatory health premiums continue in retirement and early retirement. Build the premium (and rising costs) into your FIRE spending estimate.
Total compensation: beyond the salary number (Switzerland)
Salary is one variable. Pension (2nd pillar) terms, the 13th salary, and benefits can outweigh a higher base.
| Component | Current (CHF 110K) | Offer (CHF 120K) | Value | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base salary | CHF 110,000 | CHF 120,000 | +CHF 10,000 | Offer |
| 13th salary | Yes | Yes | Equal | Tie |
| 2nd-pillar contribution | Generous | Standard | −CHF 3,000 | Current |
| Remote vs commute | Hybrid | Fully remote | +CHF 4,000 | Offer |
| Bonus | CHF 0 | 10% | +CHF 12,000 | Offer |
| True total comp | CHF 113,000 | CHF 133,000 | +CHF 20,000 | Offer |
Swiss workplace rules (Code of Obligations)
Switzerland has flexible labour law with no "at-will" employment; notice and dismissal protections are set in the Code of Obligations.
| Law / Rule | What It Means | Effective | Your Action | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Notice periods | Statutory notice is 1 month in year 1, 2 months in years 2–9, and 3 months from year 10 (contracts can extend these). | Ongoing | Check your contract — many specify 3 months. Plan moves around the notice. | In force |
| Protection from abusive dismissal | Dismissal is generally permitted but "abusive" dismissals (e.g. discriminatory) can entitle you to compensation (up to ~6 months’ pay). | Ongoing | If a dismissal seems abusive, object in writing within the deadline and seek advice. | In force |
| Non-compete clauses | Enforceable only if reasonable in scope, time and area, and generally only where you had access to client/secret information. | Ongoing | Review any non-compete before signing; overly broad ones are often unenforceable. | In force |
| No statutory severance (mostly) | There’s generally no statutory severance, except a limited entitlement for long-serving employees aged 50+. | Ongoing | Negotiate any exit package; don’t assume statutory severance exists. | In force |
| Short-time work (RHT) | Employers facing downturns can use short-time work compensation to retain staff at reduced hours. | Ongoing | If hours are cut, check you’re receiving the correct short-time compensation. | In force |
| Unemployment insurance | Mandatory unemployment insurance pays a percentage of insured salary for a period after job loss. | Ongoing | Register with the regional employment centre (RAV/ORP) immediately after losing a job. | In force |
6 career financial moves with outsized impact
A few well-timed decisions drive most of your lifetime earnings and your route to financial independence.
Negotiate per role and canton
Swiss pay is individual and varies widely by canton and employer. Research the role and region and negotiate the base and bonus.
Compare total comp
The 13th salary, 2nd-pillar terms and bonus can outweigh a higher base. Total it up — and check pension fund quality.
Budget health premiums into FIRE
Mandatory premiums continue for life and rise over time. Build them — and their growth — into any early-retirement plan.
Use pillar 3a and 2nd-pillar buy-ins
Both cut tax now and build the pillars you’ll draw on. Buy-ins are powerful in high-income years (money is locked in).
Mind cross-border remote rules
If you live in a neighbouring country, remote days can change taxation and social security. Confirm before shifting your split.
Plan around notice periods
Three-month notice is common. Line up the next role and any garden leave before resigning.
