Official sources: rates and rules from Citizens Information (Child Benefit, New Baby Grant, Working Family Payment, Maternity Benefit, Carer’s Allowance, Fuel Allowance, State Pension), the Department of Social Protection and Revenue (Rent Tax Credit), read 3 November 2026, including Budget 2027 changes. Child Benefit €140 a month

€140 a month for each of your 1 child. Not means-tested.

Working Family Payment €150.88 a week

Your estimated income of €543.54 a week is under the €795 limit for your family. Tax-free, paid for 52 weeks. You must apply.

Fuel Allowance €43 a week in the heating season

Getting the Working Family Payment means you meet the Fuel Allowance means test; it is paid automatically if no one else in the home gets it.

Rent Tax Credit up to €1,150 a year

Cuts your income tax if you rent your home: 20% of the rent you pay, up to the limit. You can also claim back for 2022 to 2025; claims for 2022 close on 31 December 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What payments can a working family get in Ireland?
Child Benefit for every child (€140 a month, not means-tested), the Working Family Payment if your income after tax is under the limit for your family size, Maternity, Paternity and Parent’s Benefit around a birth, and the Rent Tax Credit if you rent. Getting the Working Family Payment also qualifies you for Fuel Allowance.

Do I have to apply?
Yes, for almost everything. The Department starts a Child Benefit claim when you register a birth in Ireland (for a first child you complete the form it sends you), but the Working Family Payment, Carer’s Allowance, Fuel Allowance, the State Pension and the Rent Tax Credit all need a claim, mostly online at MyWelfare.ie or Revenue myAccount.

Is this an official assessment?
No. It uses the official rates and rules from Citizens Information, the Department of Social Protection and Revenue, read on 3 November 2026, but the Department decides each claim from your actual details.
