Frequently asked questions

How much is the Rent Tax Credit?
20% of the rent you paid, up to €1,000 a year (€2,000 for a jointly assessed couple) for 2024 to 2026, rising to €1,150 (€2,300) in 2027. For 2022 and 2023 the limit was €500 (€1,000 for a couple).

Can I claim for previous years?
Yes: for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 by completing an Income Tax Return for each year in Revenue myAccount. Claims for 2022 must be made by 31 December 2026; after that they cannot be repaid.

Do I need to pay income tax to get it?
Yes. The credit reduces your income tax only (not USC or PRSI), so it is worth no more than the income tax you paid that year.

What do I need to claim?
Your landlord’s details and, where it applies, the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) registration number for the tenancy. Keep your rent records in case Revenue asks for them. The landlord cannot be your parent or child.

Can parents claim for a student child’s rent?
Yes, if you pay rent for a child attending an approved course, for accommodation they use as their main home during term time, the parent who pays can claim it.
