Frequently asked questions

How much is Maternity Benefit in Ireland?
€299 a week in 2026, rising by €10 to €309 from January 2027 (Budget 2027). It is paid for 26 weeks. If you have a partner or children who depend on you, it can be higher, because it is compared with the Illness Benefit rate including increases for dependants.

Is Maternity Benefit taxed?
Yes, it is liable to income tax, but not to USC or PRSI. Revenue collects the tax by reducing your tax credits and rate band while you are paid it, so your employer’s payslip shows the effect rather than the Department.

How long is maternity leave in Ireland?
26 weeks paid by Maternity Benefit, plus up to 16 more weeks of unpaid leave straight after. At least 2 weeks must start before the end of the week the baby is due.

What do partners get?
Paternity Benefit for 2 weeks within 6 months of the birth, and each parent can take 9 weeks of Parent’s Benefit in the child’s first 2 years, all at the same weekly rate.

Does my employer have to top up my pay?
No. Many employers do, by paying your full salary and claiming the Maternity Benefit themselves. Check your contract: it changes the gap a lot.
